Perez Hilton Sued for Copyright Infringement (Photo Theft)

07.9.13

Always classy Perez Hilton has been sued by photographer Robert Caplin for copyright infringement and and DMCA violation. Caplin alleges that Hilton took screengrabs of his photos and published them on his site without paying for them. According to photoshelter Caplin contacted Perez Hilton and asked him to please take the photos down. Perez Hilton said he would, didn’t and then Caplin hired an attorney and sued.

You really should read the whole story at photoshelter. Every blogger knows that there are four ways to get a photo on your site.

  • Take the photo yourself
  • License a photo someone has taken (license is fancy-speak for pay money)
  • Find copyright free material
  • Find creative commons licensed photos

There isn’t a fifth way to get your photos. It just doesn’t exist.

Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr. (Perez Hilton) is no stranger to copyright controversy.

I interviewed Perez Hilton in April of 2012 and asked him very specifically about copyright issues.

It’s long, and frankly it’s tedious. My questions start at 16 minutes in and I wanted to know how he dealt with the backlash after he allegedly stole content from Shit White Girls Say.

At 17:30 I ask him about copyright issues and his advice is to, “Do what you think is right at the moment.”

His publicist didn’t like me.

Shocking.

Leaving New York

04.3.12

This is my second city with Oprah’s Lifeclass and it’s at an incredible pace. I just landed here a few hours ago and I’m packing up already. I’ve tried a new hotel and it’s one I might return to. Considering how high maintenance I am that’s something worth noting.

Yesterday I interviewed Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins and Perez Hilton. If you enjoy long and rambly interviews here are two of them. When I get home I’ll edit them down and find the funny-quirky-interesting-monumental moments and post them as shorter tapes.

I want to talk at length about the network and how it has altruism at it’s base. I think America is ready for a TV Network that’s mission statement includes only “Positive programming”.

Before hitting on those topics though I need to go down to Delancey Street for Bialys with a man who has known me since I was born and who took me to Alphabet City art galleries in the mid-80’s when I’m pretty sure stabbings were de rigeur.

Next week I won’t be with Oprah. I will give you three hints about what I’m up to next week:

GoPro
Dogsledding
Arctic Circle

When Perez Sued Demi

09.3.09

I don’t know that he’ll sue, her. I imagine two attorneys are about to make a lot of money, and the tabloids may have a good story or two, but Demi Moore is about to find out why celebrities hire publicists.

Good publicists.

I saw this on Twitter This morning.

Demi Moore calls Perez Hilton a child pornographer

Well, that’s suspcious, so I clicked over to Perez Hilton’s twitter stream to try and figure out what was happening and I saw this

Perez Links to skanky pictures of Talulah

Here’s a link to the party picture.

And there were links to this picture too:

Talulah with her butt hanging out

Perez is absolutely correct when he states that Talulah is a public figure, she got that way when Demi Moore and Bruce Willis put her in movies. It’s a lot for a 15 year old, but the parents created it and they know that business. They cannot plead ignorance.

Kirsty Alley loses her mind in public:

And then the unthinkable happens.

Spencer Pratt says something smart.

Spencer Pratt says something smart

Social Media is nothing new. Twitter is like the phone company and the advertising section of the newspaper all rolled up into one. News travels fast, and if you can’t stand behind what you say, perhaps it’s best to say nothing at all.

In my mind Demi Moore makes herself look like a terrible absentee parent who will not set limits on her teenage children. I don’t know that this is true, and I’m certainly not saying it is. I am not criticizing her parenting skills, though I’m sure the world is.

I guess this is why movie stars have publicists.

She did wrap up the evening with this:

Demi Moore heads out for the night

Gosh, I wonder who is watching the kids.
