Sarah Palin Is Just Like Me: Only More Employed

This morning I got an email from Mar Vista Mom asking me what I thought about Sarah Palin. Is this a good thing? The reason she’s asking me isn’t because I’m such an awesome and insightful political pundit. It’s because, here in Los Angeles I’m the only Republican she knows. Yeah, it’s not fun talking politics in LA.

Much like my finely honed gaydar (yes I can sniff out a good dancer at 100 yards), I do have a feeling that there’s one other LA Mom who votes like I do, but I’ll let her come out of the closet in her own sweet time.

To get real clear I need to let y’all know where I stand. I’ve been a registered Republican since my early twenties, and I’ve voted mostly along the party lines but never thoughtlessly. I didn’t vote for W the second time. I just couldn’t. When W said he was a compassionate conservative I thought holy shit man, me too! But then I found out that his speech writers were just prone to alliteration and words he could pronounce.

I am deeply apologetic for the W years. Please accept my apology, we will do better next time.

Mc Cain doesn’t excite me, but he doesn’t repel me either. I don’t think he’s shot anyone in the face or been incapable of chewing and cheering simultaneously so I guess we’re on the upswing.

Sarah Palin could be exciting though.

My first reaction was, Lowest Common Denominator. Seriously, she’s from a state with about 30 people in it and she’s named her children Moonray and Stinger. She doesn’t take her glasses off for a picture, and has five children. She’s almost as wacky as my very own mother.

She’s got a boy who’s about to be deployed though.
Oh, and one with Down Syndrome.

They say Palin has gotten rid of the pork barrel spending that Alaska has lived off of and helped restore integrity to politics.

I don’t love her comments about the “Glass Ceiling”. I know you won’t believe me when I tell you I’m a feminist, but The Glass Ceiling won’t be shattered by explaining to men why we have such delicate constitutions and such precious needs.

I adore the fiscal policies of the Republican Party, and I fear greatly us becoming a nation incapable of reaching down and grabbing our bootstraps. I recall someone saying, “what bootstraps?” at the DNC… way to infantilize the drooling masses. If you’re reading this on-line, you have the ability to make a living. No more bullshit, stop whining. If you don’t have a job in Hollywood, go thank your local union, there’s a guy making $25 an hour plus benefits to hold onto an electrical cord so no one trips on it. No, I’m not making that up. Your unions really are that ridiculous. Yes, my husband will effing kill me for saying so.

Sarah Palin is nothing like I am, and she’s really not the big draw to the party. I am Pro-Life and cannot be the friend you run to when you feel that you need an abortion. By the same token I will stand beside the women in community and fight to keep abortions safe and legal. Because really, we can’t have a bunch of mothers dying on us. We need them.

Ms. Palin is the penultimate feminist, bucking the system, having a large family and working like a mad woman outside her home whilst bridging two communities. I like her because she has nerve. I love that she has slowed down wasteful spending. Did I repeat myself? Oh, I love that she has slowed down wasteful spending. Did y’all hear me. This woman is not a career politician. I’m hopeful. Very hopeful.

I won’t insult women everywhere by saying that I will vote for her because she has a set of ovaries. Because really, that would be ridiculous.

With November several months away, I find myself still undecided. Last week I would have voted for Obama, now that I’ve heard him speak, and thought about the consequences of his socialist leanings, I’m more certain that he’s not for me.

  1. oh dear….I’m undecided too, but leaning in the opposite direction. I hope we can still be friends; about that I’m very decisive.

  2. I am still undecided. I have moments where I think I’m moving to one side or the other, just to doubt myself and then run back to the middle where I can comfortably sit without making a choice. I am tired of having to drive to my local polling place just to stand there faced with picking which candidate sucks less than the other, not just presidential elections, all of them. I don’t think that they give a crap how their constituents actually feel or are acting on our behalf in Washington. I think they are all there to act on their own behalf. Making choices only to further their parties agenda or to further their own careers.
I don’t take voting lightly, and I can’t really say I like either candidate enough to endorse them. If things don’t change, I guess I’ll be standing at the voting booth deciding which one I think sucks less than the other and will be least likely to make seriously bad decisions.

    ugh.

  3. Sarah is exciting to me too; I like her and I like that she’s no-nonsense.
I too am a republican… I was undecided until Obama picked Biden (for change? are you kidding- he’s been in DC for decades)… and then McCain picked sarah-
    I’M EXCITED now.

  4. Sarah Palin, if a 44 year old man with the same resume, would still knock any dimwit Dem out of the contest.

Barack about handed us this election when he didn’t choose Hillarity. And Sarah’s icing on the cake. Thanks Obama! Your arrogance did you in.

Yay to another 4 ((8?) years of common sense and decency.

  5. Hey, Sarah Palin, once you explain to your kids how babies are made, you may want to take a look at this:

“The generally accepted age for the Earth and the rest of the solar system is about 4.55 billion years (plus or minus about 1%). This value is derived from several different lines of evidence.

Unfortunately, the age cannot be computed directly from material that is solely from the Earth. There is evidence that energy from the Earth’s accumulation caused the surface to be molten. Further, the processes of erosion and crustal recycling have apparently destroyed all of the earliest surface.

The oldest rocks which have been found so far (on the Earth) date to about 3.8 to 3.9 billion years ago (by several radiometric dating methods). Some of these rocks are sedimentary, and include minerals which are themselves as old as 4.1 to 4.2 billion years. Rocks of this age are relatively rare, however rocks that are at least 3.5 billion years in age have been found on North America, Greenland, Australia, Africa, and Asia.

While these values do not compute an age for the Earth, they do establish a lower limit (the Earth must be at least as old as any formation on it). This lower limit is at least concordant with the independently derived figure of 4.55 billion years for the Earth’s actual age.”

Once you assimilate those facts – I know you’re shocked to learn that the Earth is not a mere 5,000 years old – maybe you’d be qualified to serve as a teacher’s aide.

Once you’ve mastered that, let’s talk about VP of the USA.

OK? Does that sound fair? I mean, right now it’s a little too soon to let you get close to putting your finger on the “nucular” launch button.

  6. Michael — you are brilliant. This is by far the best rational I’ve heard to date behind the insanity of McCains VP pick.

I argue that our focus needs to be the future of our children. A future equipped with clean air, good food, non toxic toys, and most importantly a peaceful world.

Despite the plethora of near catastrophically devastating actions that the past administration has wreaked on our country. ..The destruction of our constitution, trillions of dollars and thousands of innocent lives lost on a falsely trumped up war.. (why we impeach a president for screwing his intern but not his country is beyond me), refusals to acknowledge the Koyota protocol are to name just a few of the many reasons why we must stand up for our children and elect a leader that is invested in their future. McCain is More of the Same.

As a parent, Obama is the practical choice, and most well rounded and wise investment we can make for our children.

    About Sarah Palin:
    # She was elected Alaska’s governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1
    # Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2

    # She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3

    # Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4

    # She’s doesn’t think humans are the cause of climate change.5

    # She’s solidly in line with John McCain’s “Big Oil first” energy policy. She’s pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won’t be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6

    # How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.

    * About Plain taken from MOVEON email.

  7. By proferring the grossly unqualified Palin as his VP choice, John Sidney McCain III has treated our nation’s government like a game, or a vaudeville comedy show.

He will live in eternal infamy for it.

Shame on him, and shame on that sham of a party called the Republicans.

  8. I think Michael hit it right on the head. 400 years of of scientific investigation makes it very clear the earth is billions of years old. That Gov. Palin believes the earth is 6,000 years old suggests to me she lacks basic critical thinking skills. However, that aside, I think this election really is not about relative criticial thinking skills, or sex, or race, or experience, or judgement, or most compelling life story. It is about Direction. If you think the last eight years have been good, by all means vote republican. If you think the last eight years have been a disaster for America, and that the nation cannot afford four more years of Reagan economics, Neoconservative foreign policy, and theocractic micromagagement of our personal lives, you would be foolish not to vote as many democrats into office as you can. The best driver does us no good if he or she is driving us off a cliff . . .

  9. I could have written Jessica’s blog, voted Republican for president all my life until 2004. Palin’s views on energy are not McCain’s. He has consistently voted against drilling in the Arctic since the 90’s. I was disappointed that McCain chose a VP who is in line with Bush. McCain’s appeal to me, until that choice, was that he was a maverick. Fr example; his immigration plan which the Republicans tore to shreads. I love it when McCain says, “I will veto any pork barrel bill” but with Palin standing beside him while he says it it gives me pause because she is in line to be president and I think she is out of touch with reality. If McCain had selected a moderate woman he would have had me sold but as it is I am still on the fence.
