Win $100 Vons Giftcard

Last week my friend Erin won a $1,000 gift card from Vons. Yep, $1,000 just for running through the store and preparing (not cooking) dinner for four, for $25 or less. You can read about it in today’s Daily News.

I don’t have a thousand dollars for anyone, but I do have a hundred. Here are the rules:

  • Create a family dinner for $25 or less
  • Post your recipe and the ingredients on Whrrl
  • Handmade LA will be judging, that means my friends can enter (except you Jeff Rago, cuz you shop there too)
  • The contest closes next Wednesday promptly at noon pacific time
  • Use the hashtag #Vons in your story (preferably in the title so it can be found)

And here are some tips for you

  • The yellow tags are everyday low prices, look for them, they make it easy
  • O Organics brand is another show stopper
  • Buy produce in season and it will be less expensive (anyone for pumpkin soup?)
  • It’s easiest to sign into Whrrl using facebook connect
  • To start a Whrrl story you can click the green button at the top of the page on Whrrl or download it to your iPhone.

  1. Too bad there aren’t any Vons here. I have a great recipe for low-fat turkey meatloaf (with spinach and mozzarella cheese) that I think would come in under $25. Mmmm.. It’s so good around this time of year served with mashed or baked potatoes, either russet or sweet.

Good luck to those who do enter! $100 is nothing to sneeze at nowadays.

  2. Okay. Using Safeway’s online shopping, I put together all the ingredients for baked ziti with spinach in it, garlic bread, and broccoli, with a quart of ice cream for dessert. Even today, it came in right under $25, at $24.13. This was a very common meal in the Yogurt household (two parents, two kids), and always resulted in leftovers, as well as not using up all the sauce in the jar or all the mozzarella cheese for this meal.

  3. Another dinner for four from Safeway, this one costs $24.45. It’s skinless, boneless chicken breasts (2lb, which will leave leftovers), two lbs of red potatoes, and two lbs of brussel sprouts, with chocolate pudding for dessert by Kozy Shack.

  4. OK, here’s my recipe for a Mediterranean meal for my family of three. It makes enough for a pleasant evening meal (which my omnivore husband loves despite the lack of meat) and leftovers for lunch the next day (no buying lunch at work).

1 box Telma falafel mix, prepared per instructions (just add water) $4.15 http://shop.safeway.com/dnet/RichProductInformation.aspx?promo_window=1&bpn=127200857

1 package Toufayan Whole Wheat Pita Bread (actually, I’d probably make my own, but I’m not sure how to count pantry ingredients) $1.49 http://shop.safeway.com/dnet/RichProductInformation.aspx?promo_window=1&bpn=960012470

    Tzatziki sauce made from-
    1 carton plain organic yogurt – $3.29 http://shop.safeway.com/dnet/RichProductInformation.aspx?promo_window=1&bpn=960004969
    1 cucumber – 99¢
    garlic – 50¢
juice of one lemon – $3.99 for five, let’s pro-rate and call it a buck

    1 bag Spring Mix greens – $3.99 http://shop.safeway.com/dnet/RichProductInformation.aspx?promo_window=1&bpn=184650261

All that goes together to make sandwiches (or be eaten as each family member chooses).

2 pounds red potatoes (roasted with olive oil, salt, and pepper plus leftover lemon juice) – $4 http://shop.safeway.com/dnet/RichProductInformation.aspx?promo_window=1&bpn=184500048

1 bottle Yellow Tail Shiraz (for the tall members of the family only) – $5.35 http://shop.safeway.com/dnet/RichProductInformation.aspx?promo_window=1&bpn=189050503

Total is $24.76 so I hope the tax and CRV on the wine don’t count toward my total. (If they do, there are several wines for $3.98 that we can substitute.)

  5. Creamy Low-fat Turkey Ham & White Bean soup
1/3 pound Jennie-O Turkey Ham, cubed
    2 tbsp olive oil
3 cans white beans, drained, 1 can mashed
    2 carrots, large diced
    1 medium onion, diced
5-8 small white potatoes, peeled, diced
    3 cloves garlic, minced/crushed
1 quart chicken or veggie stock
    water to cover
    salt & pepper to taste

heat oil in large stock pot, sautee onions until translucent, then add garlic, carrots, and potatoes. Sautee for 5 minutes. While veggies sautee, mash one can of white beans. Add all beans to the mixture, add stock/broth plus enough water to cover soup (will depend on the volume of your ingredients). Simmer for 20 minutes, or until potatoes and carrots are soft. Remove 2 cups of soup to large bowl, thena dd cubed turkey-ham, simmer 5 more minutes. Use immersion blender, standard blender, or potato masher to blend 2 cups reserved soup. Return this portion of the soup to the pot, stir. You might continue to use the immersion blender until soup is desired consistency. Add salt and pepper to taste (turkey ham is pretty salty, so wait until the end to salt).

You have creamy soup without cream and fat simply by mashing potatoes & beans!

  6. Forgot the pricing!
3 cans beans, potatoes, carrots, garlic, stock, ham, onion is about $14.75, the most expensive ingredient being the ham because it comes in ~$5 portions. You can add a nice loaf of crusty bread for an additional $4 and easily come in under $25!

This soup serves 4 hearty portions with plenty of left overs.

  7. YUMMO Chili
    1 can black beans, drained
    1 can corn, drained
    22 oz. can crushed tomatoes
    1 pkg taco seasoning (dry)
1 pkg ranch dressing mix (dry)
1 lb ground beef or turkey
1 sm. can of chopped green chiles

**Fry up beef or turkey until brown. Put all ingredients into a crockpot on low for about 2-4 hours. Serve with shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and use tortilla chips to scoop!
