Friday Confession: I Take This

I confess.

Alli works wonders. I’ve used it a few times since Alexander was born. Go on vacation and gain 5 pounds? Forget the cleanse, take Alli. Just don’t eat fatty foods or you’ll have the Alli oops.

  1. Part of the reason why alli works so well is because it prevents people from eating fat. Kind of like the concept of Antabuse for alcoholics: if they drink booze while on Antabuse they get sick.

Now to be preachy. I have chapter on weight loss supplements and pharmaceuticals and he is my section on alli:

Orlisat (also known as Xenical and alli™)

From the alli website: “alli™ works by preventing the absorption of some of the fat you eat. The fat passes out of your body, so you may have bowel changes, known as treatment effects. You may get:
    gas with oily spotting
    loose stools
more frequent stools that may be hard to control”

So let me get this straight: you eat fat, and then you shit your pants, right? That’s what you mean by “hard to control,” isn’t it? According to my wife (a family physician), not many of her patients take it for long because of this reason. At any rate, the effects are shown that, when combined with caloric restriction, you achieve 8.4% weight loss at six months with Orlisat vs. 5.7% in the placebo group, which is nothing worth losing control of your poo hole over.

I just really don’t like the whole pill-popping mentality because it interferes with the whole healthy Zen mindset of exercising hard and eating good quality food and not too much of it.

    But maybe that’s just me.

  2. I have wondered how it is… I pretty much agree with James, though. But maybe if you are conscious of the fact that eating fat will have some rather nasty side effects, you are less likely to consume it, therefore, less likely to consume the calories that go along with it.

But I love “miracle” pills and I confess that I might pick up a bottle to jump start getting rid of my winter bloat. ;)

That being said, I did the Slim Quick 7-day “cleanse” and did not lose a single pound… Probably because I didn’t change what I ate.
