The Birthday List

My husband and parents keep asking me what I want for my birthday.

I’d like to play tennis or maybe take a hike. I have everything I ever wanted, so I don’t really want any gifts.

Well, there is one thing.

I want chickens. I want backyard chickens for eggs and for fun. I’d love to have fresh eggs every day, and nothing feeds your flowers quite like chicken poop. My dream is to get the Araucana chicks that are a day old from McMurray along with a nice hutch for them.

I’ve been asking Mr. G to let me have chickens (just a few maybe 2-4) for the past five years or so. I’m pretty sure he’s still thinking he’s against it, but Mom and Dad, if you want to make me really happy for my 40th Birthday, you’d change his mind. And, no, I have no clue how to get him to change his mind.

I just thought that public begging might work.

  1. I hope you get some! I kinda want a few, too – but not sure we could really care for them appropriately. And the kids and I would be so sad if we killed our peeps… :)

  2. I want chickens, too! My wife is not so keen. We’re fighting with the county to get an ordinance passed so we can do it without being hassled. Our neighborhood has many sheriff’s deputies who live here. It makes it safe, but it makes it difficult to do things sneakily.

  3. We have guinea hens. They eat a lot of ticks. So do chickens, but the guineas have less smelly poop. Anyway, little else beats going out to the coop in the a.m., grabbing some fresh eggs (still warm from the hen) and having a lovely homemade breakfast.

I hope you get your hens…and Happy Birthday.

And, if you think you need a lot of rooms for hens, you don’t….Lots of great stuff in Mother Earth online.

  4. We’ve loved having chickens! The eggs taste so much better–there truly is a difference! Unfortunately a band of wily raccoons cleaned out the chicken coop one night, but I’m going to put a new and improved chicken coop next to the studio–Baby chicks are fun, and big chickens are great to watch–

I do have some goats you can have–I will personally deliver them to your house : )
