There Are No Bellgirls

Maybe in boxing there’s a girl who rings a bell. But checking into a hotel, one always asks for the bell boy or the bell man. One never asks for the bell girl.

We got the bell girl.

To start off our last family vacation we were both stupefied when a “bell girl” showed up to  carry our luggage to our room. Said bell girl was about 22, maybe 130 pounds, and close to six feet tall. A waif, if you will.

On what planet would my husband sit around and let a skinny scrawny girl carry his family’s luggage? Maybe every man who checks into the hotel should simply leave his nut sack as well as his AMEX?

Blah blah blah, feminism, equal rights, fine. But no bell girls.

  1. ROFL – I had a bell girl once help me to a room – I carried my own bags like a sucker – once we got into the room and she put her hand out to ask for a tip I was confused as I carried my own bag…

so I asked do you have alot of guys who carry they’re own bag – she replied “yup” but you still expect a tip – she replied “its custom to tip” to which I replied yah its also custom for you to carry the bags…. I said it in a rude tone and promptly starting shutting the door. To only hear her mumble though the door “why is it always the guys”

I thought about this alot at the time I worked for Catalyst and was very understanding of the feminist movement and equal rights but was also troubled by the role reversal. I was thankful that when I called to check out a bellboy was there… no issues for me.

I still think there is a reason why a female bar tender will earn 20-40% more tips then the male counter parts. we live in a sexist society that is slowly changing.

  2. Okay, I kept the tab up and have been giggling about the use of the “nut sack” phrase. (yes, I am THAT mature, so there) – also, though….I see nothing wrong with a bell girl if she is actually capable of doing the job. And, let’s face it, it IS her job so I don’t see why a guy would feel they automatically have to do the work for a female in such a position. I get the “gentleman” “guy” thing, but this is different than common courtesy….it’s a person’s job.

Call it socialization or whatever you want but any man who wants to retain a measure of masculinity will carry those bags. At best he may let her carry something small, her job or not.

  3. Oh come on! If the bell BOY were the same build, you’d let him carry the bags, right?? And what if the bell GIRL had been 50 pounds bulkier and 35? Would you have let her carry them then? I bet yes.

    1. If she was a truck driving, flannel wearing, tobacco spitting, 250 pound woman my husband would STILL carry his own bags.

It’s what men do, and I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, I’m just saying that’s the man I married.

  4. That is so funny! You are NOT having good hotel experiences recently! But they do give lots of good blog ideas… :)

Hey, maybe I can send my oldest daughter to be one of the bell girls there. She’s skinny and scrawny, and as a bonus, moody as heck! She’d be employee of the month!

  5. Yeh, my husband would have carried his own bags and I would tell my son to carry his own bags. Sometimes male/female differences and respect issues being ingrained in society trump the need for equal access to the bellman job position.
