It’s My Birthday and You Have to Listen to Me

The internet has made our world smaller, and that is a good thing. Everyone who has spoken to me about microblogging knows that I’m madly in love with the work that my friends at Epic Change do. I’ve fallen for Africa without ever having visited because of the Twitter Kids. As a community we’ve watched disasters unfold in New Orleans, Japan, and Haiti. We’ve taken action and raised millions of dollars quickly and efficiently. This is a good thing, this is an incredible use of the connectivity the internet provides. What we …

Stop Asking Me For Money

There’s something in the air. Everyone is asking for money for their charity. I love giving to charity but I hate the way I’m asked. I just left the grocery store, and as I was paying the clerk asked me if I would like more information about their blah blah blah program, “No thank you.” I replied, and she started in with all the benefits of their blah blah blah program. I smiled at her, “No thank you.” And she made the move to put a pamphlet in my hand. …

My Other Love

It’s been a tough week for Mr G. His shoulder surgery appears to be successful, but it wasn’t as small as we’d hoped for. He had three arthroscopic sites and then they cut off the end centimeter of his clavicle with traditional surgical tools. It was like a bris for his shoulder. What was nice for us was the ability to spend some quiet time together. No, I’m not counting the time we spent with him sucking on Vicodin and me talking his ear off because he was in too …

Bah Humbug and I’m Really Fucking Sorry It’s a Bad Year

I see that our most recent Momversation video isn’t exactly well received. Apparently to be successful in the blogosphere one needs to be poor, crippled, in mourning or preaching charity at every turn. When I go to my email inboxes I have dozens of emails from various charities asking for support. Mostly I get these end of year emails because I’ve given during the year. There are dozens more emails for last minute gifts, and ways to alleviate holiday stress. I have no holiday stress, Chanukkah is over. The worst emails …

Giving: All The Ways I Am Bad At It

If you are a parent at my child’s school, please click on something else right now (like maybe some Palin Porn). Everyone else, get ready to change your opinion of me. I am not a giver. I do give, but not with my whole heart. I’m a selfish giver. I give to Project Angel Food because they gave to me. I give to LLS, because people I love need that research. I give to Epic Change because they bring me joy. I give to many other organizations, and I almost …
